How to tell how old a kitten is? Accurately
Determining the age of a kitten can be challenging, but there are several signs that can give you an idea of how old they are:
-
Teeth: A kitten’s teeth will come in at around 3 weeks old, their incisors will be the first to appear, followed by their canines and then their molars.
-
Eyes: Kittens are born with their eyes closed, they will typically open at around 7-14 days old.
-
Ears: Kittens’ ears will start to stand up at around 2-3 weeks old.
-
Coat: Kittens are born with a fine downy fur, at 2-3 weeks old their coat will start to change and become thicker.
-
Walk: Kittens will start to walk and run at around 3-4 weeks old, their movements will be a little unstable and clumsy.
-
Size: A general rule of thumb is that a one-week-old kitten weighs around 2.5 oz (70g), and doubles its weight by 2 weeks, and triples by 3 weeks.
It’s worth noting that these are general rules and some variations can occur. A veterinarian will have a more accurate way of determining the age of a kitten by looking at the kitten’s teeth and bone structure.
